There are all kinds of ways to categorize Pokémon, but let’s take a look at some of the ugliest Pokémon in the Franchise that we totally love! There is always a Pokemon for everyone, some of these critters are incredibly scary but they are all endearing to us in their own way! Check out these ugly Pokemon below...
22. Whiscash - a dual Water/Ground type Pokemon from Generation 3, it is often known as the 'Whiskers Pokemon', with its great long curly whiskers either side of its face. It's known to be super territorial, can set off tremors and can predict real earthquakes. It has a big goofy smile with staring eyes, although it is totally endearing!
21. Qwilfish - a dual type Water/Poison Pokemon introduced in Generation 2 and often known as the 'Balloon Pokemon' due to its ability to inflate and become huge when absorbing water. It is a sea dwelling Pokemon and has puffy pink lips and angrily slanted eyes, which make it look scary and intimidating. It can use water pressure to shoot poisonous quills at its opponents, which will cause them to faint.
20. Croagunk - a dual type Poison/Fighting Pokemon from Generation 4, known as the 'Toxic Mouth Pokemon', this little guy looks based on a real life tree frog, with its three fingers and toes and bulbous head. It possesses a very high attack aswell as special attack and although not great in defense, makes up for this with epic Poison and Fighting Type moves, it really packs a punch!
19. Snubbull Pokémon - a kind hearted critter that is pink, fierce and a little scary looking on the outside - but in an adorable way! Much like bulldog in real life, it is said to look aggressive to ward off opponents, but this trait can make it lonely and sad. All it wants is love and will make a wonderful companion.
18. Exeggcute Pokémon - a dual type Grass/Psychic Pokemon introduced in Generation 1 that features five different creepy faces and the fact that its form is made up of six eggs creeps me out! All those eyes watching you at once, maybe it's subconsciously spider-esque in that way? It evolves into Exeggutor when exposed to a Leaf Stone. In Alola, Exeggcute will evolve into Alolan Exeggutor when exposed to a Leaf Stone.
17. Drowzee
- a Psychic-type Pokemon from Generation 1 and known as the hypnotizing Pokémon, it is based on the Japanese legend of the Baku, a tapir-like creature with a habit of eating people’s bad dreams. It has a short and stubby body type with a strange and scary expression on its face, like it's under the influence of some kind of dark substance. Kind of cute but mostly creepy and scary!
16. Mr. Mime
- a bipedal humanoid Pokemon that possesses an uncanny resemblance to a clown. It has blue growths resembling clown hair and strange, expressive, china doll-like eyes. Mr Mime has been a staple of the franchise ever since he was introduced in Red & Blue.
Its many facets include being a helpful critter in the Ketchum residence, a low-life criminal resisting an interrogation like in the Detective Pikachu movie and there is even a Galarian variant! It is also known as the 'Barrier Pokemon' and is known for its top notch pantomime skills, but it makes many want to run away fast!
15. Seismitoad
-
a Water/Ground-type Pokemon from Generation 5, that looks very scary, with a bulbous body and head and strange suckers all over its form. The concept behind Seismitoad is that each of the different mounds that line its body have a different power, such as paralyzing enemies or creating strong vibrations. It can create earthquake-like tremours, the bumps on its head can shoot a paralyzing liquid, while the ones on its hands can be vibrated to increase its punching power.
14. Feebas
- while Feebas’ design doesn’t look especially ugly at a glance, it is supposed to be one of Hoenn’s most hideous creatures, as is mentioned by Pokédex entries and NPCs in-game.
This little critter is the protagonist of its very own Ugly Duckling story.
Over time they may grow a Prism Scale on their body, which eventually gives them the power to evolve into Milotic – the single most beautiful Pokémon of gen 3.
The hard part about this Water-type fish is how hard it used to be to catch a good one back when Ruby & Sapphire first came out.
13. Purugly
- this Pokemon is just adorable, it kind of looks like an overweight cat! It bears a fierce expression however, plus funny wiry zig zag whiskers and has a rotund, bulky shape. It is said to be a bolshy character, barging in to other Pokemon's nests and frightening them off so it can steal their nests. Kind of like a grumpy cat! It evolves from the classy Glameow - after their owner spoils them beyond recognition! Although it is a grumpy character, for some reason that makes it super endearing! As a cat lover I’d kind of love to have one of these grumpy fur-balls destroying my furniture and making my life a beautiful mess – though it would have to be a bigger home to house this large feline.
12. Muk - kind of like a living blob, even though that sounds harsh, that's what it looks like! Muk is often known as the 'Sludge Pokemon', a Poison-type Pokemon from the original 151. Born from decaying waste, Muk is a living biohazard, leaking toxins that instantly kill all plant life it touches. Even being in close proximity to plants will cause them to wilt. It can be found in heavily polluted areas.
11. Barbaracle
- a dual type Rock/Water Pokemon, known as the 'Collective Pokémon', Barbaracle is more of a community than an individual.
It is a conglomeration of Binacle – seven, to be exact. Its extremities, torso, and even its head are simply individual Binacle focusing on different tasks. Also, its head is a hand too. It's very bizarre and a little scary!
10. Sandygast - a dual type Ghost/Ground Pokemon from Generation 7, this guy looks just like a sandy ghost with a huge and gaping mouth and is known as the Sand Heap Pokemon. It can suck the life force of people or Pokémon through its mouth, which is possibly the second most scariest thing ever! The first is that is born from grudges that seep into the sand, such as from Pokémon that suffer defeat in battle or the deceased - definitely horrifying!
9. Electivire - an Electric type Pokemon introduced in Generation 4, this yellow stripey critter looks almost like a yeti with its furry body. With human-like teeth too, it definitely looks intimidating in battle. In terms of electrical-energy output, Electivire is one of the best among all Electric Pokémon. It discharges high-voltage currents from its tails, which shock opponents on contact with over 20,000 volts! It can also electrify its punches by gripping on to its tails. A Pokemon I would never want to face in battle!
8. Magmortar
- blasting fireballs of over 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit from the ends of its arms, this clown looking Pokemon was introduced in Gen IV and is known as the Blast Pokemon. It is incredibly scary and intimidating, with its creepy eyes and mouth, looking like a certain clown from a certain horror movie. There’s so much anger and resentment in its gaze…
though it makes an incredibly strong force and Fire addition to your team that will pulverize most opponents in the blink of an eye!
7. Probopass
- a dual Rock/Steel type Pokemon who shares the same nose as Nigel Thornberry! Probopass has some super strong magnetic powers, with magnetized iron filings resembling a mustache under its most prominent nose! It is known as the Compass Pokemon and has three mini objects on its back and sides, which are called 'mini noses'. It can control and command these mini noses to attack opponents from three different directions - scary! It also emits strong magnetic fields that can damage any nearby appliances.
6. Silicobra - known as the Sand Snake Pokemon! This Ground type Pokemon is super scary, partially appearing as wet sand, partially a snake. It has a huge bulbous pouch around its neck area, where it stores excess sand from digging holes, so it can spray it from its nostrils at opponents during combat. It has sickly green eyes with dark bags underneath and a long curly, winding body, like a worm.
5. Garbodor - Waste has to go through several locations and treatments before becoming the poisonous sludge Muk was born from – and there’s a Pokémon for every stage of the process.
Known as the Trash Heap Pokémon, Garbodor is what happens when tons of solid waste gain sentience.
You can almost smell it through the screen, sadly this Poison-type monster kind of looks like its life is pain.
4. Gurdurr - reminding me a little of a villager in Minecraft - I think it's the nose or the eyes? - Gurdurr comes from Generation 5 and is a Fighting-type Pokemon. It might be described as a clown-like, human-like grey fleshed figure with an hourglass like figure. The steel frame it carries is used to train its muscles, although it is much more in to demolition than any construction.
3. Impidimp - a mischevious Pokemon I'm sure won't mind ending up on this list, it will be too busy stealing items from peoples houses to notice! It is thoroughly creepy looking with a scary pointed nose and ears, fangs and is a betroot pink. It is a dual type Dark/Fairy Pokemon introduced in Generation 8 and later evolves in to Morgrem, which is equally scary looking with a creepy straggly fringe.
2. Crabominable
- a crab with furs! Known as the Woolly Crab Pokémon, this Fighting/Ice-type was introduced in Generation 7 as Crabrawler’s evolution.
Since it only evolves on the cold heights of Mount Lanakila, it makes sense to make it an Ice-type. It is kind of a king crab fused with Abominable Snowman vibes.
1. Jynx
- is possibly the most iconic and commonly known ugly Pokemon for its generally unappealing and even unsettling looks along with its 'seductive' attitude. This Pokémon design has been heavily criticized in the past for its suggestion of resemblance to racist cartoons, or that it is making fun of Drag Queen culture. Jynx is a dual type Ice/Psychic Pokemon and it likes to dance seductively. Despite being slightly altered over the years to be less inflammatory, this blonde not-so-bombshell is still famed for being the ugly Pokemon, but I just think it's unique!
