One of the most famous starter Pokémon is the fire type critter. Fire types have enjoyed a special place in people’s hearts in almost every game thanks to their fiery nature, powerful moves, and all-around coolness.
In the anime, despite Pikachu being his main guy, Ash always made sure that Charizard had a prominent place in his team. Other famous examples of fiery greatness are the remarkably stylish Malva in Pokémon X/Y’s Elite Four, and the recently retouched Flannery from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
If you want to hang with the cool kids, burning grass types and bug types to ashes for fun all while liking Team Valor Leader Candela’s Instagram feed frenetically, then you’ll love this list of our top fire-type Pokémon that you have to check out. What can I say except that it's 'lit'!
35. Heatmor
An anteater Pokemon in the anime, Heatmor is a fire type critter introduced in Generation V. Despite definitely being able to hold its own in a fight, this poor Pokemon doesn't get as much attention in the fan art world. It's not quite cute-ugly to make our list of uglist Pokemon of all time (but we love them!) and it kind of looks plain unfriendly, like a bad tempered neighbour wearing a baby suit. It originates from the Unova region and does not evolve in to or from any other Pokemon. True to its appearance, it is known as the Anteater Pokemon and is definitely an original and unique kind of critter!
34. Turtonator
From the Alola region comes this funny critter from Generation 7, who's name sounds like a cross between a teenage mutant ninja turtle and a transformer. Despite its fierce yet funny appearance, with a little hat that looks like a sun shade, this critter actually has interesting Fire/Dragon typing and great defense stat. However, it might be a little tricky to work with in battle. Alongside the rotten egg smell from all the sulphur it consumes, it’s known as the Blast Turtle Pokémon because its shell is made of volatile, explosive material. This makes it pretty terrifying to fight alongside in battle, not just against!
33. Emboar
This fiery Pokemon was made to look ferocious, in a little like a clown-circus master-ringleader kind of way. People have nicknamed it 'bacon-in-the-making' which is just plain mean! A dual fire and fighting type with decent Attack and Sp. Attack stats, Emboar has failed to impress fans with its design as a Fire-type starter. It definitely looks intimidating and confrontational and is probably lovely at heart but I can understand that Emboar might not be the #1 choice as far as camoflage goes, to accompany trainers on their journey through the Unova region.
32. Volcanion
A dual Fire Water type Pokemon introduced in Generation 6, it is known as the Steam Pokemon and is said to have enough power to blow up a mountain, with the Sp. Attack to back up those claims.
Plus it has the Defense stat to allow it to survive the ugly aftermath of such a feat, so is definitely a strong and powerful dude. It's definitely got numbers in all the right places.
It's also known for being hard to find, which goes along with it being an event exclusive mythical Pokemon.
31. Magcargo
A fiery hot snail Pokemon with an adorable yet slightly creepy melty little face. Painstakingly training your little Slugma will result in a Magcargo, designed as like a glob of hyper-hot magma, this spicy critter is a dual Fire and Rock type that was introduced back in Generation 2.
He was part of my first team to be inducted into the Hall of Fame after defeating the Elite IV.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but Magcargo was able to pull through thanks to its stellar Defense and solid Sp. Attack to power up moves like Flamethrower and Earth Power. Flame Body also helped get some chip damage in. With its body temperature estimated to be a massive 18000 degrees Fahrenheit, you could say it's one of the hottest little guys around.
30. Camerupt
A dual Fire and Ground type Pokemon from Generation 3 that often gets overlooked and is definitely underrated! Not only is it an epic fighter and excels offensively with a high Attack and Sp.Attack, it possesses a volcano inside of its body! Its really creative design replaces the water tanks in a camel’s body with lava-filled volcanoes waiting to erupt, which makes it totally unique and definitely memorable in the Pokemon universe.
It was also lucky enough to get the Mega Evolution treatment. Its Solid Rock ability will keep the damage taken from super-effective moves to a minimum, making it a viable option in many team compositions if you’re looking to break the mold.
29. Victini
A Pixie legendary Pokemon from the anime and possibly one of the cutest ever Pokemon of all time, it is known as the Victory Pokemon and is known to bring Victory to whomever trains it. Appearing a little like a golden rabbit-bird with wings, with a striking 'V' shaped crown for Victory, it is a dual Psychic and Fire type Mythical Pokemon that arrived in Generation V and was brought into the world of Unova to shine the light of hope.
It is said to bring its trainer victory in any encounter, which it will usually achieve if you only consider single-player content.
Its rounded legendary-level stats will keep it well above most threats to be found in the Unova region. What's more, its V-Create unique move will progressively deal more damage as it lowers the opponent’s defenses. One of the best good luck charms you will ever hope to have!
28. Coalossal
From the Galar region comes this smoky Goliath like critter, which pretty much measures up to its name in every way. A dual Rock and Fire type Pokemon that arrived in Generation 8, it also has much in common with a steam train as this giant beast is powered by the environmentally unfriendly energy of burning coal. It evolves from Carkol at level 34 and is the final form of Rolycoly. Needless to say, its greenhouse gas emissions only increase once it has a chance to Gigantamax.
Luckily it will only become enraged and start spewing smoky matter if it’s disturbed by vandalism and disruptions in abandoned mines.
27. Centiskorch
A fire monster from the Galar region, if you’re on the look out for a powerful Galarian fire creature that won’t result in ocean levels rising in the long run, then opt for Centiskorch.
The evolved form of Sizzlipede, it has since acquired a bigger and more primal-looking form, as a bit like a dragon fused magic carpet. It is a dual Fire and Bug type, which is reminiscent of fan-favorite Volcarona, and it makes Centiskorch a very interesting choice for bug teams. You can definitely see the 'centipede'-likeness about it and its long, winding and lit up body appears to be on fire. Like with many of these awesome and adorable critters, the clue is in the name!
26. Houndoom
A dual Fire and Dark type Pokemon that the cool kids will love because it is positively edgy and one of the most badass critters I've ever seen! Not least for its great offensive stats, solid speed and the fact that it can literally spew burning poison at their opponents in battle. It also made an appearance in our best dog type Pokemon rankings. Popular among motorcycle gangs and team rocket grunts alike, Houndoom arrvied in Generation 2 and looks intimidating and pretty diobolical, winning it a whole range of fans from all over! If it were rumoured that they gave designing rights to an angsty 14-year-old for this one, I would believe it.
25. Salazzle
A dual Poison and Fire type first introduced in Generation 7, we all secretly really want her as our cosmetic Pet in World of Warcraft and equally want to be her in real life. I mention “her” because this Pokémon appears only as a female. Full of magical charm, she is known as the Toxic Lizard Pokemon, which seems pretty accurate and evolves from Salandit at level 33, having perfected the production and deployment of potent pheromones to attract male Salandit it can mate with. These pheromones can be distilled down and de-toxified to make perfumes. She even has the high flying career of being perfumer we always wanted to have. An excellent sweeper with high Sp. Attack and solid Defense, its ability Corrosion is also very unique, letting Salazzle poison Pokémon who might normally be immune, such as Steel and Poison types. Jealous much!
24. Oricorio (Baile Style)
Another stylish Pokémon we might expect to see in the Alola region's equivalent of Vogue is this dual Flying and Fire type critter with an extensive array of outfits, you could say. Oricorio is known as the Dancing Pokemon but most often known for all the outfits it likes to wear - here we will take a look at Oricorio after it consumes Red Nectar and goes into Baile Style.
The critter’s design is cleverly inspired by the Spanish dance of Flamenco, in which dancers often wear red dresses with fringing similar to Oricorio’s feathers.
It makes a fun and exciting addition to your team, to take on your adventure through the region, collecting badges and dismantling criminal operations.
Even if it changes styles along the way, it always has a same type move thanks to its unique Revelation Dance, which changes type along with Oricorio. Versatile and also stylish and uber cute!
23. Chandelure
A dual Ghost and Fire type from Generation 5, it is known as the Luring Pokemon. If that isn't enough to intrigue you, just check out its creepy, spooky, fantastical design that looks straight out of Tim Burton's creations. Although its appearance is probably enough to frighten away opponents on sight, it also possesses a nice variety of projectiles and long ranged attacks and comes attached to a very powerful Ghost/Fire sweeper that’s viable in plenty of teams.
It can also have both Flash Fire and Flame Body as its abilities, which make it super competitive. If you’re a tasteful individual in a spooky mood, then Chandelure might very well be the Pokémon for you.
22. Pyroar
Pyre, Pyromancer, the clue is definitely in the name! This regal looking fiery beast definitely looks the part, with the 'roar' part of its name seemingly have been derrived from the noise a lion makes. It also looks very different depending on its gender, which is exciting to see as it makes the critter even more realistic. Males have a large, majestic mane, while females have a somewhat slimmer look to them.
It is known as the Royal Pokémon and with high Sp. Attack and great Speed, as a dual Fire and Normal type sweeper in many compositions both for single-player and competitive play, Pyroar is regal in every possible sense.
21. Incineroar
A bipedal, feline like Pokemon from Generation 7, who is also known as the Heel Pokemon, Incineroar resembles a tiger but reminds me a lot of the Frosties mascot, just a whole lot fiercer! It is said to bear a violent, selfish and hostile disposition to match its fiesty appearance, this time what you see is what you get! It's an extremely good fighter thanks to its high attack and great moves as a dual Fire and Dark type.
20. Entei
A legendary dog of the Johto region with its distinct white mane, Entei was rumoured to have been born in the eruption of a volcano. Within the game, cultures that know of Entei think it is responsible for volcanic eruptions around the world, whenever it roars.
In combat this powerful critter can exert pressure over its opponent, doubling their PP costs. It has very well rounded stats, with Attack and Speed among the best, and everything about this beast is majestic.
19. Delphox
The final evolved form of Fennekin, Delphox is known as the Fox Pokemon and was introduced in Generation 6. It is said to have the special skill of being able to see the future in the flames of its stick, with it being a dual Psychic and Fire type. It appears a little like a Shinto monk, ready to perform some kind of ceremony at any time. Whatever its motives, it definitely looks cool. You will find it using Future Sight and Fire Blast to make the most of its high Sp. Attack and Speed. Delphox's interesting design is rumoured to be grounded in Japanese lore and it definitely looks intruiging and mysterious.
18. Ho-Oh
Appearing a little like a Phoenix and lighting up the sky with its fiery plumes is Ho-Oh, a dual Flying and Fire type with amazing Sp. Defense and Attack and positively great all round stats! It’s said that this graceful beast will grant eternal happiness to those who see its feathers shine in the sunlight. It may not be the oldest Legendary Pokémon, but it was the one that many of us saw first of all! Ash actually spots Ho-Oh as he prepares to leave Pallet Town on his Pokémon adventure right from the earliest episode of the anime, despite the games only being in generation 1 at the time. This creature is as majestic as it was when we first spied it!
17. Reshiram
Known as the Vast White Pokemon, Reshiram is a dual Dragon and Fire type legendary Pokemon from the Unova region. A Generation 5 beast, you might know it from playing Pokémon Black/White.
Its design is so cool; it appears to embody a white statue with angelic outstretched wings and a voluminous flowing mane, which is so different aesthetically to the other Pokemon on this list. It's such a fascinating and beautiful creature, plus its tail is essentially a jet engine with the power to change the world’s weather!
16. Rapidash
True to name, this Pokemon is incredibly fast and agile, running at about 150 mph and galloping after everything to try and race it. It boasts incredible acceleration and appears as a fiery horse creature with its glowing mane, introduced in Generation 1 and known as the Fire Horse Pokemon, although surprisingly it is not among the fastest when it comes to combat. However, its Attack and Defense stats are well-developed, and the Flash Fire ability guarantees it can stand its own from other fire types.
15. Magmortar
A super scary looking clown-like Pokemon, this fire type evolution from Generation 4 is not just a sinister face. It possesses stellar offensive capabilities and its explosive power makes it a total punisher in battle. It has stellar offensive capabilities and the Sp. Defense to face your average sweeper. It doesn’t just look like Stephen King’s “It”, but it’s also about as hard to take out. Check it out in this list of Ugliest Pokemon (but we love them anyway!)
14. Heatran
One of the quirkiest critters that looks to be made entirely out of heated rock, Heatran also looks like one of the old World of Warcraft enemies that haven’t had new textures in about 10 years. Known as the 'Lava Dome Pokemon'', it is uncommon and hard to find, said to dwell in volcanic caves, and this Fire/Steel-type has a fiery spirit and a body made of molten steel that’s as heavy as it is badass. It can use its cross-shaped feet to dig into the rock of the underground magma tunnels it inhabits to lever its massive body around. It has stellar tanky stats and excellent Sp. Attack, can take a heavy beating and has access to moves like Magma Storm that make it a great bulky sweeper. You can also find this critter in Heaviest Pokemon ranked here!
13. Primal Groudon
Groudon is technically normally a ground type but I think I just get away with adding it to this list as, on holding the Red Orb, it will undergo Primal Reversion and become Primal Groudon, a dual Ground and Fire type. It appeared in Omega Ruby and has been enjoyed ever since, not only for its incredible gleaming scarlet scales, absurdly high stats and otherworldly Sp. Attack but also because it possesses enough visceral power and vast strength to make the world’s landmass increase on a whim. Further still, its Desolate Land ability can make the weather extremely hot, stifiling and debilitating for any Pokémon not of the fire variety.
12. Moltres
A scorching firebird is next on the list, a legendary bird Pokemon that has the ability to control fire. As one of the OG legendary birds, introduced in Generation 1, this fiery bird is considered a deity of fire with its flaming wings and plumage that glimmer with a dazzling red glow.
It’s an excellent sweeper and it has legendary stats all-around. It shares the Pressure ability with all other legendary birds, but also possesses the ability Flame Body which can set enemies on fire if they touch Moltres. A truly magnificent critter and the stuff of legends!
11. Blacephalon
A dual type Ghost and Fire Pokemon that was introduced in Generation 7, known as an Ultrabeast, a being from another dimension. It is also known as the Fireworks Pokemon to people in the Alola region, perhaps due to its ability to cause sudden and powerful explosions to confuse, surprise and distract its opponents, to then rob them of their vitality. It possesses insanely high offensive stats and speed, but on the other hand has very little in the way of survivability. One of its signature moves is to remove its head to throw it like a bomb! It's fair to say this critter - or beast - enjoys the attention and to shock and scare and confuse. Deeply confuse!
10. Volcarona
A butterfly like Pokemon with pretty scarlet wings and spots that make it appear a little like a ladybird, or ladybug. Bugs in the Pokémon franchise previously had a bit of a reputation for being non fighters.
They were easy to catch and fast to evolve but didn't pack as much potential as the bigger guys in the long run.
Then they introduced the amazing dual Bug and Fire type Volcarona, now a common sight in competitive teams, an amazing sweeper thanks to moves like Quiver Dance, its stellar Sp. Attack, and Speed.
It carries the Flame Body ability, meaning it can set its opponents on fire on contact, in addition to some epic psychic-type moves that give it amazing coverage.
9. Ninetales
Known as the Fox Pokemon, this cute critter is based on the Japanese legend of the 9-tailed Kitsune spirit. It is a Fire type Pokemon introduced in Generation 1 and captured all our hearts when the first Pokémon games came out in 1996.
Its graceful movements and majestic form have been inspiring beautiful fanart ever since. It is the evolved form of Vulpix and now we are lucky enough to have an Alolan form of the classic fox, its typing changed to an icy fox, which is ever so beautiful.
Its Drought ability and solid stats mean this long-lived creature is a valuable weather-setter that can definitely hold its own in a fight.
8. Cinderace
Known as the Striker Pokemon, this Fire type was first introduced in Generation 8 as a bona fide footballer, the best soccer player in the Pokémon kingdom. Cinderace can use its Pyro Ball ability to create a soccer ball made from fire that it can aim at its opponents. It’s the final evolution of Scorbunny, Galar’s cutest starter! This critter looks a little like an elf in appearance, with huge pointy ears and huge feet of course!
7. Typhlosion
This prickly looking beast is a Fire type known as the Volcano Pokemon, first introduced in Generation 2! This pure fire type just tears through its opponents in battle, you'll never forget this fiery porcupine. It possesses amazing Sp. Attack and Speed that mean it pretty much always get the first (and last) laugh. Its name is a combination of the words Typhoon and Explosion, which definitely makes sense!
6. Flareon
A famed Fire type Pokemon we first met in Generation 1, we've been besotted with this famous critter ever since! The evolved form of Eeevee, it may look cute but Flareon is a total beast. Its Attack is outstanding, and the Flash Fire ability comes in handy in a variety of situations. The air it inhales is ignited by a flame inside of its body and gets expelled as fire and it appears as a furry, fiery little critter with a fluffy golden mane.
5. Talonflame
A fiery falcon Pokemon that first started out a cute and tiny Fletchling, but has now grown in every way to become a powerful beast with super strong talons and neon yellow stripes on its tail. A dual Fire and Flying type, it was first introduced in Generation 6 and is known as the Scorching Pokemon. It has superior Speed plus its Gale Wings ability gives Flying type moves priority. Every Pokémon game family needs a “default” bird you can meet early in the game and players of Pokémon X/Y were blessed with one for the history books!
4. Arcanine
Known as the Legendary Pokemon, Arcanine is a Fire type Legendary Pokemon that was first introduced in Generation 1! Arcanine are known for their bravery and loyalty and often known to be police dogs in the Pokemon universe. This impressive fire type will use its Intimidate ability to lower its enemy’s Attack, and then proceed to pummel them with its stellar offensive capabilities and Speed.
It also has its own feature in Best Dog Pokemon in the Franchise!
3. Infernape
A dual Fire and Fighting type Pokemon we've known since Generation 4. It is known as the Flame Pokemon, a bipedal monkey like creature sporting a flaming lock of hair and blue toes! It's a fast and powerful attacker that can trash the E4 by itself with a decent level.
Its epic design is said to be based on the Chinese legend of Sun Wukong and you couldn't face a more intimidating looking attacker in battle.
2. Charizard
A familiar face, Charizard was first introduced in Generation 1 and we feel we've known it all our lives. Its growing popularity has netted it two Mega Evolutions, many memes, a badass Gigantamax form, and a lot of fan art over the years. Plus all the Pokemon memes! Although not the strongest Pokemon around, Charizard is an epic sweeper in battle and it can use both Blaze or Solar Power to enhance its offensive stats if need be. It has earned a firm place in the hearts of fans and deserves to be right up there! It is a dual Fire and Flying type and an evolved form of Charmeleon starting at level 36, its wings can carry it close to an altitude of 4600 feet and it can blow out fire at such extreme temperatures that it can melt literally anything. Including our hearts.
1. Blaziken
The Blaze Pokemon, a dual Fire and Flying type, this epic bipedal chicken-like beast bags the top spot by bringing together the most popularity points and competitive strength among the fire types. Generation 3’s fire starter (well, its final form anyway - Torchich is the original starter but turns into Blaziken at level 36), not many flame critters can clear a 30 storey building in a single jump (with those epic legs!) let alone withstand, and match, the power and prowess of its blazing punches that leave its opponents scorched and blackened. It's fair to say it bears immense power and force in battle. It has an incredible array of moves that gives Blaziken incredible coverage against other types, and its Flare Blitz ability is ruthless on such a high attack Pokemon. The fact that it comes from the cutest starter in Pokémon history also heeds its popularity!
